Winners of 2014 Awards for Engineering Excellence Announced

Monday, April 14, 2014

VANCOUVER, BC – The 25th annual Awards for Engineering Excellence Gala, held Saturday night at the Vancouver Convention Centre West, honoured the innovation and technical excellence of Association of Consulting Engineering Companies British Columbia  (ACEC-BC) member firms.

“This year’s winners represent the best and brightest that our industry has to offer, and are a testament to the amazing work of B.C.’s consulting engineers that we have been showcasing on this stage for 25 years,” said said Keith Sashaw, President and CEO, ACEC-BC.

The theme was ‘Swing into Spring’, and guests dressed to impress in 1940’s attire. Special guests present included Her Honour, the Honourable Judith Guichon, Lieutenant Governor of British Columbia and the Honourable Linda Reid, Speaker of the BC Legislature.

The premier award of the evening, the Lieutenant Governor’s Award for Engineering Excellence, went to H5M (a Joint Venture by Hatch Mott MacDonald Ltd. and MMM Group) for their onshore works on the Port Mann/Highway 1 Improvement Project. Between Vancouver and Langley, the Trans-Canada Highway 1 is Metro Vancouver’s busiest transportation corridor. The highway, with its associated interchanges and connections to the region’s growing communities, services daily commuters as well as commercial truck traffic and provincial travellers.

“H5M’s contributions were instrumental to the Port Mann/Highway 1 Improvement Project, one of the most important transportation projects our province has seen in years,” said Sashaw. “The team implemented a number of technical ‘firsts’ for a project of this magnitude, such as developing the majority of the highway design using 3D modelling and Building Information Management methodologies.”

Awards were given in six categories: Buildings, Municipal, Transportation, Natural Resource, Energy & Industry, and Soft Engineering.

The 2014 prestigious Meritorious Achievement Award was handed out to Brian Johnson, P. Eng. Brian recently retired from Stantec after 30 years, 20 of which he served as Vice President, British Columbia. As Vice President he oversaw the growth and development of the company to over 800 staff and revenues in excess of $100 million. He has contributed significantly to industry groups and community associations over the years, and is a friend and mentor to countless professional engineers in the province.

The Young Professional Award was given to Allison Clavelle, P.Eng., of Urban Systems Ltd., whose impressive resume includes significant roles on major transportation projects. She has served two terms as the Chair of ACEC-BC’s Young Professionals Group and is an ex-officio director of ACEC-BC.
